Carell Gets Smart and Laughs from Crowd

Friday got started quickly with a two hour Warner Bros. panel. Director Peter Segal started off showing the premiere trailer for the feature adaptation of Get Smart. Also on hand for the star studded panel were the new Maxwell Smart, Steve Carell, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Ken Davitian (Borat), Nate Torrence and Maki Oka (Heroes). Carell was asked whether it felt more like working on a comedy or an action film. His reply was that it made him look athletic, coordinated, smart and sexy, which in reality he is none of the above. He went on to say that the film keeps true to the tone and feel of the TV series only deals with modern political issues.

If Family Adventure Has a Name, It Must Be LEGOÆ Indiana Jones: The Videogame

LucasArts and TT Games Don Their Fedoras for the Next Great LEGO Gaming Experience

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - July 27, 2007 - LucasArts and TT Games today announced that LEGO Indiana Jones: The Videogame [working title] will whip onto game consoles everywhere in summer 2008. Developed by the same team at Traveller’s Tales that created the LEGO Star Wars(tm) series, LEGO Indiana Jones presents a tongue-in-cheek take on the first three cinematic adventures of pop culture’s most iconic archaeologist, including Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

“LucasArts and TT Games are setting the bar for next-generation family entertainment with the LEGO Star Wars franchise, and our incredible relationship continues with LEGO Indiana Jones,” said Jim Ward, president of LucasArts. “In addition to providing the quality bonding time inspired by any good family game, LEGO Indiana Jones delivers something a little different for everyone. Parents will enjoy the humorous take on some of their favorite movies, and their kids get some rousing action/adventure gameplay that may also introduce them to Indy’s original adventures for the first time.”

“It has been a real joy to work with LucasArts on the LEGO Star Wars games. Indiana Jones is the perfect character for the next LEGO-based videogame adventure,” said Tom Stone, director at TT Games. “Indy also presents us with wonderful and memorable cinematic moments. The boulder scene of Raiders of the Lost Ark in LEGO is hilarious!”

Lucasfilm Ltd. recently announced that the LEGO Group will begin releasing LEGO Indiana Jones playsets in January 2008. Meanwhile, LucasArts remains hard at work on its revolutionary, internally developed Indiana Jones videogame, which takes place a year after The Last Crusade in an original story overseen by George Lucas.

Be prepared…

27 07 2007

Programming content is always news at Comic-Con, but this year Programming itself is newsworthy.  Why, you ask?  Because the Comic-Con staff has organized it like never before.  This includes established entrances and exists to programming rooms, and most panels being back to back without a break except in the larger rooms. Entrance and exit hallways are clearly marked.

So if you’re on the way down, be prepared.

Got registered at 9:30 in the industr y line which was really short and efficient.  Industry and pros got to wait inside while everyone else waited outside for the exhibit hall and convention to open at 10.  Industry and pro got in first, followed by everyone else.  Another change from past years.

Sampled some of the programming.  The first panel was on The Ar t of Adapting Comics to Screen, and included writers such as Don Paine, Mark Fergus, and Kevin Feige; I came in midway on this and it was all right but nothing too revealing in terms of filmmaking.  There was a lot of discussion as to what made good superheroes, which ultimately centered around their character flaws, faults, and personal struggles.

Immediately after that came a spotlight on animation and now comics fixture Paul Dini.  Paul’s a fun and entertaining guy to listen to who clearly has enjoyed the wide range of things he’s worked on in his career, from early days interning at Filmation to his best known work at Warner Bros. Animation on shows like TINY TOONS and BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES to his current work with DC Comics.  Interestingly, though moderated by his current DC Comics boss, the panel (particularly the fan questions) regularly returned to animation.

Then it was across the hall for the SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN panel with Supervising Producer Greg Weisman, Supervising Director Victor Cook, Character Designer Sean “Cheeks” Galloway and the voice of Spider-Man, Josh Keaton.  The first teaser clip was unveiled (twice!) leaving the audience cheering for more.  This new series returns back to the heart of the original 1962 comic with Peter Parker in high school, and from what concept art was shared promises to introduce many fan favorites (including Harry Osborne, Gwen Stacy, etc.) in what is admittedly a compression of time as many of these characters first met Peter in college.  Fans had many questions, including what villians would be featured - some are more expected than others, and surprises were hinted at, though all will come from the Spider-Man Rogues Gallery.  The audience also called for wanting to see the revival of the classic “web shooter” over the more organic web shooting as seen in the recent films, and as they are just looking for overseas studios now, there may be time in the production pipeline to take this to heart if not already done so… time will tell. THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN was announced as debuting March 2008 on Kids WB!

Now on a lunch break.  I’ll check back in later,

Shannon

Late(r) to the party…

27 07 2007

As the Project Management Coordinator for AWN, I spent Thursday back in LA working on business for some more exciting stuff that will come your way soon.  Finally at 8pm, I found myself on a late train to join in on the action.  Settled into my hotel room shortly before midnight.

As I’ve said in my own blog, this is Gina Ruiz and Rick DeMott’s deal and you’ll be getting most of the coverage from them.  But it also didn’t make sense for me to blog in my own one and compete with this, so I thank them for letting me be a small part.  If I run across interesting things to share that they don’t, I’ll chime in along the way.  My main love is programming (I always feel you can never stop learning and improving), so I’ll try to give a flavor for some of the panels I see, for those of you who have never been to Con.  And also, as mentioned before, there’s my own panel Saturday night.

Now I’m going to turn it back to your main blogging crew.  I’m looking forward to what they have to say next!

Until tomorrow (or rather, later today),

Shannon

Sweeping the Floor on Day 1

26 07 2007

San Diego Comic-con 2007 started with an early morning train ride for AWN’s Managing Editor Rick DeMott and myself. We met at Union Station a little before 6:00 a.m. lugging our laptops, luggage, schedules, floor maps, phones and cameras.

Rick loves the train!

Two hours later we were in San Diego and gawking in amazement at just how much the Con has grown in one short year. I couldn’t believe that it was only Day 1. At 9:00 a.m. the streets were completely packed. Thousands of people packed the blocks of the Gaslamp District. Everywhere we could see was a sea of people. We weren’t the only ones amazed at the volume. News crews and the general public were all commenting on the crowd.

Dark Horse Comics News

26 07 2007

News from Dark Horse Comics:

Indiana Jones for a new generation

Lucasfilm’s celebrated action/adventure hero, Indiana Jones, the forerunner of popular characters such as Lara Croft, will be making a triumphant return in 2008 with the yet-to-be-titled fourth installment of the Indiana Jones film series. Starring Harrison Ford and directed by Steven Spielberg, the film is slated for release in May 2008. Dark Horse Comics is excited to announce that it has acquired the comic book rights to the world’s most famous adventurer and will launch a new series in 2008. Fans can plunge themselves into the adventures of the fedora-wearing archaeologist well before then. In February 2008, Dark Horse Comics will publish the first of two Indiana Jones Omnibuses collecting Dark Horse’s previous entries in the saga. Then April sees the release of volume one of Indiana Jones Adventures—a digest-sized graphic novel designed for the enjoyment of young readers as well as adults. The Indiana Jones Adventures volumes and the Omnibuses will continue on a quarterly basis—including Omnibuses for the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles and the original Marvel run of Indiana Jones comics.
A comics adaptation of the film will be released simultaneously with the motion picture, followed immediately by an all-new Indiana Jones comics series.

Dark Horse Is Getting Creepy . . . and Eerie

The magazines that gave a whole generation the shivers are back. Creepy and Eerie were the definitive horror and sci-fi comics of the 1960s and flourished up until the early 1980s. Dark Horse Comics has entered into an agreement with New Comic Company to create archive editions of this classic material, as well as launch new Creepy and Eerie comics for modern horror fans. The licensing deal will encompass publishing, select film and TV development, and merchandising. Many of today’s brightest stars will lend their talents to the venture, including horror legend Bernie Wrightson (City of Others) and modern master Steve Niles (30 Days of Night, Criminal Macabre).

Creepy is best remembered for its classic horror and was hosted by Uncle Creepy, while Eerie often ventured into science fiction and featured Cousin Eerie as its host. The rest of the gang includes Hunter, Child, El Cid, Marvin the Dead Thing, and the newly developed Creepy Family. The magazines, originally published by Jim Warren are remembered as presenting some of the era’s greatest genre comics work.

“Both Creepy and Eerie are fondly remembered by comics fans as representing the best of science fiction and horror, and Dark Horse is proud and excited to relaunch these classic titles,” said Dark Horse publisher Mike Richardson.

“Mike Richardson and Dark Horse have an impressive and deep understanding of what it will take to help us correctly re-launch Creepy and Eerie. It’s a great fit for our brands,” said New Comic executive and Submarine Entertainment Co-President Dan Braun, who negotiated the deal in cooperation with CAA—who represents both New Comic and Dark Horse. Deals in TV and Film are expected to be announced shortly.

New Comic Company acquired all rights in all media to the Creepy and Eerie comic book series earlier this year and was formed by New York based Submarine Entertainment and Los Angeles based Grand Canal Film Works.

New efforts are expected to debut this fall with the classic tales being prepared for the hardcover Dark Horse Archive series.

New Comic and Grand Canal Film Works executive Craig Haffner added, “The depth of this library across the horror, sci-fi, and fantasy genres makes it truly tantalizing for a multitude of different platforms. Our association with Dark Horse will take us one step closer to realizing our goal of returning the Creepy and Eerie brands to their former stature and beyond.”

Dark Horse has set a tentative release date for the comics in early 2008.
